Tamasin Cole identity

For my own stationery I have always used a set of rubber stamps. It began as a reaction against extravagance, and I have stuck with the system ever since. I use a number of stamps in different combinations to produce letterheads, invoices, compliments slips and CD cases as I need them, and for other purposes such as stamping my address on parcels.

One of the most interesting aspects of being asked to design an identity comes before any work is done, working with the client to establish the brief.

People asking for logos often haven't begun to think about where it might be used, in what medium, or whether it is in any way useful for their business to have a logo in the first place. Persuading them to rethink their preconceptions about what they think they need often leads to a very different end product.

I particularly enjoy the challenge of finding a solution which works well in a variety of different situations - photocopied in monochrome, printed on T-shirts, blown up huge, used very tiny in a small ad, or used as a rubber stamp.

In the late 1980s I designed the identity for the City Lit adult education institute in London which was used for over 15 years until they recently moved to a new building.
